Parades are upon us! My personal favorite, Push Mow, is this Saturday, and there are pretty much non-stop parades in the city from this weekend until Mardi Gras day. We’ve given you lots of tips on how to take your kids to the parades, but now we’ve got some ideas and even some free downloads to keep everyone entertained while you hang around on that parade route.

Sidewalk Chalk

This old favorite can be picked up at any dollar store and it’s amazing how much fun the kids can have with this.

Play Ball

Another simple one. Let the kids toss the ball back and forth to their heart’s content.

Read

Bring some books or download the Kindle app on to your phone or tablet. There are plenty of kids books on Kindle Unlimited if you don’t want to spend too much on any one book. You can also grab leftover magazines from the Mandeville branch of the library that other patrons have donated.

Make Bead Dogs

That old activity from your childhood is back! Twist small pieces of beads into little dogs.

Bubbles

Smaller children will love running through and popping bubbles.

Eat

Not only do we all have to eat, but it’s a great activity for keeping the kids entertained. You can walk into a nearby grocery store to pick something up, grab the traditional parade food of choice–Popeyes, or you can create and bring your own snack packs to the route. We’ve got some great ideas for this in the Pinboard below.

Parade Activity Pack

We teamed up with Jefferson Parish Parent to bring you a pack of Mardi Gras themed activity for your kids to do along the route–FREE! There are word searches, a cross word, a maze and more. Some even featured our site mascot Nellie! You can download the pack by clicking here.

Dance Party

My childhood memories of waiting for parades all include me dancing in the streets–usually to “They All Asked for You.” I’ve put together a Youtube Playlist of some of my favorites or you can always download a few directly to your phone/tablet (affiliate link).

Still haven’t found an idea you like? I’ve pinned some other fun ideas below that you’re welcome to check out.
