Did you watch the Grammys last night? I didn’t–my kids are too loud for me to watch anything in prime time–but a lot of my friends did and I noticed that now that we’ve gotten older, we’re kind of cliche. Pretty much every parent I know had one of a few reactions to last night’s show. Did you watch it? Did you say/do one of these thing? Or more than one?
Who are These People?
This parent is honestly trying. They like music and they want to keep up. Sadly, after several years of “Wheels on the Bus,” they’re left wondering who in the heck all these people are! They aren’t sure whether to be ashamed or proud.
What are They Wearing?
Despite all attempts to remain cool and hip, age has a way of sneaking up on you. These parents stare at the TV and try to figure out what in the BLEEP these kids have on their bodies. And has no one heard of a haircut? Or proper shoes?
It’s Time to Homeschool
Whether it’s Kanye rushing the stage, or an unknown celebrity choosing to wear tape as an outfit, nothing makes you want to cling to your babies quite like seeing how scary the real world is. Suddenly you feel GLAD that the only songs they know are sung by cartoons.
Despite never having played an instrument and having no musical education, this parent became an expert immediately upon tuning in to the Grammys. They listened to the commentary very closely! And they even checked Twitter! Bonus: they’ve got a subscription to TMZ so they can tell you who One Direction’s song is actually about.
Similar to the Music Scholar, this parent is able to give you a full report on the clothes. She quickly fills up her Facebook page with night’s “hits” and “misses.”
The MLM Tie-In
She can’t help it. She’s all business all the time and while watching the Grammys is no exception. Taylor’s eyes? She knows how to get you that look. Adele’s nails? Ditto. And did you see those Stella and Dot earrings? She can hook you up. And don’t worry! The Dads like this have great shake or supplement to give you energy and help you look like one of those movie stars.
The Grammys Are On?
Sadly, for a lot of us, having one or more kids means that we’re woefully behind the times. If it didn’t happen on Mickey Mouse Playhouse, it didn’t happen. #SquadGoals. For those moms, the first time they hear about the Grammys is when they parked their butts on the couch and checked their Facebook. Even then they were too tired to get up and put it on. Maybe next year. Or next decade.
