What is an HIIT Workout?

If you have any fitness-loving friends in your circle then you may have already heard about HIIT workouts. They are, without a doubt, the latest fitness craze and with good reason. Research is showing that this effective workout can leave you burning calories even after it’s over. Pretty awesome right? So what are these amazing workouts? We’ve got the scoop:

What is HIIT?

HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. But what the heck is that? Basically, you switch back and forth between doing cardio exercise at your highest energy level and a lower level. Working out at your highest energy level even for a short time creates a ton of benefits that you don’t see from a traditional cardio workout. Sounds amazing, right?

What are the Benefits of HIIT?

HIIT is great for your heart. Pushing up into that zone of maximum energy will have your heart pumping really hard and will make actually make it stronger very quickly. HIIT workouts can also increase your metabolism for the 24 hours following your workout–who doesn’t love the sound of that?

What Else do you Need to Know About HIIT?

While HIIT sounds like a miracle workout, you can do it too much. That level of wear and tear on your body is too rigorous for a daily workout. Instead, experts recommend taking a day or two of rest in between these workouts and doing something more traditional.

One more thing about HIIT: you don’t need to go to a special gym to do these exercises. Our sponsors at Pelican Athletic Club offer HIIT classes on site and they include them in the price of membership. That’s right! It’s nothing extra if you are a PAC member and want to try out this fitness trend. Here’s a live I did over at PAC where I got the scoop on HIIT and even caught some of the class in progress.
